Fullerton Celebrates Women In March With a Themed Afternoon Tea Set And “Wings Of a Woman” Art Exhibition

Date Monday, February 13, 2017

SINGAPORE, 13 February 2017 Throughout ancient and modern history, women have collaborated and led purposeful action to redress societal inequalities in the hope of a better future for their communities and children. For the third consecutive year, in conjunction with International Women’s Day (8 March), the “Fullerton Celebrates Women” campaign returns from 1 to 31 March 2017. The campaign is marked by a new International Women’s Day Afternoon Tea created by new Executive Pastry Chef Enrico Pezzelato, a limited edition Fullerton Angelic Plush Bear and a group art exhibition entitled “Les Ailes d'une Femme” (Wings of a Woman).

Aside from shining the spotlight on women and their achievements, the campaign also provides a platform for guests to lend a hand to women in need. The Fullerton Heritage pledges to donate partial proceeds from the sale of the International Women’s Day Afternoon Tea and limited edition Fullerton Angelic Plush Bear to Singapore Council of Women’s Organisation (SCWO) Service Fund. (Refer to Annex A)

International Women’s Day Afternoon Tea at The Courtyard

Hailing from Recoaro Terme – a small town and commune in Veneto, Italy, new Executive Pastry Chef Enrico Pezzelato, pays tribute to his hometown with a yellow-themed, Mimosa-inspired Afternoon Tea Set specially commissioned for International Women’s Day. In Italy, the mimosa is the harbinger of spring, blossoming before any other flower in the early days of March. It is also the choice of gift for gentlemen to present to the women in their lives on International Women’s Day.

The themed Afternoon Tea Set comprises seven savouries and eight sweets, each tinged with characteristic sunny hues. Tapping on all-natural ingredients such as carrots, saffron, corn and oranges, Chef Pezzelato eschews the use of any artificial colourings or flavours.

Composed into petite bites, the savoury selection includes Smoked Duck with Roasted Yellow Capsicum and Orange on Saffron Roll; Roasted Butternut Squash and Yellow Ricotta on Tomato Bread; Saffron Salmon Rillettes and Avruga Caviar; and Herbed Brie with Apricot Chutney on Hazelnut Crackers.

On the sweets front, Mango Profiteroles are a delightful combination of mango pastry cream and airy choux puffs, while Vanilla White Chocolate Cremeux sits on a crunchy Sablé Breton (shortbread) Crust. Freshly baked scones, a quintessential afternoon tea treat, are served warm to the table with clotted cream and berry jam.

The three-tiered Afternoon Tea Set is priced at S$48*, inclusive of free-flowing tea and coffee. A special beverage, Mimosa (sparkling wine), created specially for the occasion, is available at an additional S$20*. For each tea set sold, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore will make a donation of S$5 to SCWO Service Fund in support of marginalised women. The first 200 patrons will receive a limited edition pack of postcards printed with paintings of residents from Star Shelter (a temporary refuge for women and children who are survivors of domestic violence). Harking back to The Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s history as the General Post Office, guests are welcomed to pen a special note and post the postcard through our red postal pillar boxes to encourage a fellow female friend or to thank an inspiring female figure.

Les Ailes D'une Femme' (Wings Of A Woman) Exhibition

In partnership with Miaja Gallery, The Fullerton Heritage presents “Les Ailes d'une Femme” (Wings of a Woman), featuring Kim Xu (Shanghai) and Nissa Kauppila (U.S.A.) in celebration of International Women’s Month from 1 to 31 March 2017 at East Garden Foyer, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. (Refer to Annex B for artists’ biographies)

Each artist explores a deep connection with personal experiences such as joy, passion, perseverance or despair, and through their art express how both fragility and strength can define an individual. Each of the subjects that both Nissa and Kim paint are reflections and symbols that naturally align with the cause of what International Women’s Day represents: a celebration of love and respect towards the achievements made by women throughout history.

Partial proceeds from the sale of artworks will also be donated to SCWO Service Fund. For enquiries and reservations, please email enquiries@fullertonhotels.com

ANNEX B

Kim Xu’s Biography

Kim Xu was born and raised in Suzhou, China and moved to Shanghai to pursue his passion for art and fashion at the age of nineteen.

Kim’s art very much reflects his personality and life experiences, fusing both traditional Chinese watercolour techniques – a skill he learned from his grandfather – and Western-style oil-based techniques. This combination creates truly un-earthly pieces that speak of beauty, passion, love and despair, packaged and portrayed by the beautiful and strong women he paints. His style is surreal and chic, empowering the female gender and he is regularly praised as one of China’s most important up-and-coming artists.

Kim’s work has been the focus of a number of high profile events and editorials, capturing the attention of the fashion world. In 2007, Kim was commissioned by Vogue magazine to do a special edition feature named “Fashion meets Art”. In 2008, Kim was also asked to form a collaboration with Hong Kong luxury brand Joyce to celebrate the first anniversary of their operation in mainland China. Later that year, Kim was also invited to contribute to London fashion publication Wound, for which he produced a series of works inspired by the designs of Alexander McQueen, Fendi, Dolce&Gabbana and Peter Pilotto.  Other brands he has worked with include DAN, Taittinger Champagne and Harvey Nichols, as well as his paintings can be found in many private collections around the world and installation pieces in public spaces in China.

Nissa Kauppila’s Biography

Nissa Kauppila was born in Vermont, U.S.A. She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an M.Ed. from the University of Vermont. Her paintings are exhibited internationally, with current and future exhibitions in mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States. Kauppila's immersion in Chinese painting has awakened a sense of fragility; her work explores the use of line and colour as tendrils of tension while embodying a sense of wonderment for the natural and industrial worlds. She challenges the notion of context, forcing the viewer to confront the abrupt beauty of life and death through the explosive movements in colour, line and depth.
